Stan Brakhage died on March 9, 2003. This letter on is death was posted to FrameWorks, an email discussion group on avant-garde film, on March 9, 2003, the day Brakhage died, by Bruce McPherson of McPherson & Co., publisher of the anthology of Brakhage's writings, Essential Brakhage. However, Bruce McPherson's statement of Brakhage's words is not quite accurate (whether due to his mishearing or misreporting of what Marilyn told him or due to Marilyn's misstatement, neither is sure, due to the obvious stress of the moment). What Brakhage actually said, Marilyn states, was "I've had a really good life. Life is great."

Dear listmembers,

Stan Brakhage died this afternoon, Sunday, March 9th, in Victoria, British Columbia.

He died in hospital, where he had been recovering from an infection, following a sudden turn for the worse yesterday. Marilyn Brakhage was with him. Yesterday he told her: "I've had a wonderful life. Life is great."
